Closer to home at only 10-15mins, Saklikent Gorge, for many a holiday highlight! The Gorge is an impressive18km long with high, steep and narrow sides, where the sun seldom manages to reach the water that runs its course and as a consequence, the water that gushes out at Saklikent is as cold as ice, even at the height of summer.

Visitors to the gorge initially walk along a raised wooden platform, where they can gaze down at the foaming torrent below, but it is possible and highly recommended to venture up the gorge through the water. Take some appropriate foot wear with you if you can, or hire at a nominal cost a pair of plastic slip-ons.

Outside the entrance to the gorge, the water course widens into a more normal looking river as it heads towards the sea. Here you can relax on pontoons over the water, Turkish style lounging on cushions to take cay or have a meal, while dangling your feet in the chilly water. Rubber rings are available and offer the opportunity of an interesting ride down the fast flowing river.

Earlier we mentioned Turkeys long and distinguished history, so for the archaeologists and right on your doorstep, in fact within sight of the Villa, is Tlos. This archaeological site was once one of the oldest and most important cities of ancient Lycia. But if the ruins fail to capture the imagination of your children, then there's a trout farm nearby where they can feed the fish over a spot of lunch.

Keen walkers will be more than well catered for, apart from the nearby 10,000ft of mountain, the villa also provides a good base to walk sections of the Lycian Way. The 500km of trail starts at Fethiye and generally follows the line of the coast to end at Antalya. This walkers paradise offers spectacular scenery, with turquoise seas, green hills and rocky mountains, perhaps Turkey at its very best!
